If you have a Coleman 3-piece cap that is leaking and not holding pressure, don’t throw it away or replace it with a one-piece cap. Replace the seal and keep your old 3-piece cap!
Fix and keep your old 3-piece Coleman fuel cap! The old 3-piece cap design is superior to the new cheaper one-piece cap design. With the three-piece design, the sealing gasket seats on the fuel tank fill spout lip and then is pressed down into place to seal the fuel tank. The new one-piece cap rotates and twists the sealing gasket down onto the sharp tank fill spout lip, which over time can cut and wear out the sealing gasket.
When to replace the seal gasket: If your Coleman stove or lantern fuel tank is leaking or not holding pressure, the most likely cause is that the old fuel cap gasket has hardened and dried out over time and won’t fully seal, no matter how hard you tighten the cap. If this is the case, you should replace the sealing gasket.
How to remove and replace the gasket in your Coleman 3-piece fuel filler cap – Removing the old dried out gasket:
First take apart the cap. To get the screw loose, put the cap on your fuel tank and snug it down. Then loosen the cap screw with a screwdriver. Remove the cap from the tank and finish removing the screw. To get the dried rubber gasket out of the disc, it is easiest to burn it out with a propane torch or by holding it over a gas burner on your kitchen stove with a pair of pliers. Do so at your own risk and don’t burn yourself. After you have burned the old gasket, you should be able to pick the pieces out with a sharp tool. Remove all the old gasket, and then install the new o-ring. Reassemble the cap and you are ready to go!
NOTE: You have to get all of the old gasket out of the disc, or the new o-ring will not fit. I had a customer contact me because she couldn’t get the new o-ring to fit in the disc. She emailed me a picture of her disc, which is the disc in Figure 1 above. It still had old gasket material in it. I recommended she try burning the gasket material out on her kitchen stove gas burner. She did this and replied,
“I did what you recommended and it worked. I burned it out on the gas stove. I held the cap with metal pliers for a few minutes over the flame. Then I used a sharp instrument to pick out the material. It worked out great and the new gasket fit in fine.”
You must make sure that ALL the old gasket
material is removed from the metal disk or the new o-ring will not fit or seat
properly. The old gasket material can often look like part of the metal disk.
The easiest way to make sure it is all removed is to heat up (i.e. burn) the
metal disk per my instructions above. Believe it or not, the metal disc in the picture
above still has old gasket material stuck in it. This is a picture a customer
sent me when he could not get the new oring to fit or seat properly. He sent me
the picture and said,
“I have the three piece cap off a 500A Coleman stove
and the orings don’t seem to fit, per your instructions I have cleaned the old
residue out. The diameter is too small and also the cap won’t screw on as the
o-ring prevents the cap from seating on the threads.”
I saw his picture and
asked him if he had burned out the old gasket. He eventually replied:
“I’ve
been a garage guy all my life, I would swear I was scraping against the brass
cap with my awl when I was cleaning the old gasket out of my 60 year old cap. I
finally heated it up per your instructions and amazingly the old cork gasket
fell out!! All is good!!”

Will these o-rings work for the cap on my
Coleman stove model ###?
I am often asked if these orings will work for a particular model of Coleman
stove or lantern. The answer is that Coleman only has three different caps, per
my picture above. There
is the original “small” 3-piece cap from before 1940 which is 3/4″ diameter
(about the size of a penny). These “small” caps require a different
gasket. Then there is the more common “large” 3-piece cap used for Coleman
stoves and lanterns from about 1940 to 1970, which is 1″ diameter (about the
size of a quarter). These orings are for this “large” 3-piece cap. If you have a
three piece cap, it is probably the large cap, and these orings will work fine,
as long as you get the old gasket out first. Around 1970, Coleman replaced the
3-piece design with the newer cheaper 1-piece design. The 3-piece and 1-piece
caps are the same size and are interchangeable, but the 1-piece cap requires a
different gasket which is harder to replace. These orings will not work on the
1-piece cap. So if your cap is the 3-piece cap shown in the picture above, these
orings will work just fine. But you need to make sure your Coleman stove or
lantern has the 3-piece cap and not the newer 1-piece cap. For the record, the
3-piece cap above is from my Coleman 425B two burner camp stove, while the
1-piece cap above is from my newer Coleman 400A single burner stove.
